Scientists warn Christmas lights harm the planet

December 24, 2008 08:06am

SCIENTISTS have warned that Christmas lights are bad for the planet due to huge electricity waste and urged people to get energy efficient festive bulbs.

CSIRO researchers said householders should know that each bulb turned on in the name of Christmas will increase emissions of greenhouse gases.

Dr Glenn Platt, who leads research on energy demand, said Australia got 80 per cent of its electricity by burning coal which pumps harmful emissions into the atmosphere.

He said: "Energy efficient bulbs, such as LEDs, and putting your Christmas lights on a timer are two very easy ways to minimise the amount of electricity you use to power your lights."

He said the nation's electricity came from "centralised carbon intensive, coal-based power stations" which were responsible for emitting over one third of Australia's greenhouse gas emissions.

Dr Platt added: "For a zero-emission Christmas light show, you may consider using solar powered lights or sourcing your electricity from verified green power suppliers."

Google life Images

Click here to see the image collection

Check out this collection of historic photos recently uploaded to the Google image search. There are a couple hundred pictures of things and events ranging from early civil war to the Apollo Moon landing. These pics really show life from a distant era. I Found this picture particularly interesting due to the apparent poverty. We have evolved so much in the last 100 years. Here I am typing on this lapop with Chili in the Crock pot and this lil girl is wearing rags. Anyways lot of neat pictures to look at. Take some time and check them out and appreciate how far we have came and where we are going.

Hang 'em high

I know you've noticed that the price of gasoline has dropped by almost a dollar in the past couple of weeks, proving the market revolves on the principle of supply and demand.

Actually what happened is that Americans, fearing the financial times we're experiencing have just stopped putting so much of their budget into their gas tanks and driving less.

But hold on, even now our tacit enemies at OPEC are getting together to talk about cutting production to run the price back up again.

It's only a matter of time until either OPEC's edicts or some international incident will send petroleum prices skyrocketing, and even now that prices are down they are still too high and seriously rupture the family budget and hamper the industries who make their living in transportation.

What is hard for me to believe is that the three hundred million or so people who are citizens of the U S A and are mandated by the law of the land to send representatives to Washington who act according to our best interests, sit back and let a handful of green nuts, tree huggers and sell out politicians stop the production of our plentiful supply of domestic oil.

I have come to the conclusion that almost all politicians are dishonest and say things for political expediency rather than telling the truth.

It's like when you hear one of them telling you that the oil companies have millions of acres of federal land already approved for drilling they never tell you that there is likely no oil to drill for on a lot of this land.

They also don't want you to know that there are millions of acres of proven oil reserves in the western states and offshore where they forbid the companies to drill.

The sorry truth is that Americans, by a large majority, want to drill in this country and off shore, but a few high profile Hollywood types and super rich people who give millions to campaigns are opposed to drilling so, instead of truly representing their constituencies, the politicians sell we the people out.

If the people of this country ever stopped to really consider what happens on Capitol Hill they would form a lynch mob, set up a gallows on the steps of both houses of Congress and start hangin' 'em high.

The House and Senate don't represent you and me, in fact the only time they even admit we exist is when they come looking for our vote.

They trumpet their passing a bill supposedly benefiting the people and hide their dirty little pork and earmarks, making sure they never see the light of day.

So folks, the gas prices will rise again, and probably higher than they've ever been before while Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and the rest of the do-nothings on both sides of the aisle, regurgitate platitudes and make sure that America sends seven hundred billion dollars a year to people who would like nothing better than seeing America destroyed.

I'm sick of Congress, I'm sick of the Senate, I'm sick of the smirk on Nancy Pelosi's face and the wimpy voice of Harry Reid, I'm sick of the whole bunch of crooks on Capitol Hill who spend our money like it was water and stop America from being oil independent.

Bring them home this time America. Bring them home and put some honest people in office.

What do you think?

Pray for our troops

God Bless America

Postal Service Looks To Cut 40,000 Jobs In First Layoff In History

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - "We lost 2 billion dollars and like any other business we have to stay afloat." And to keep from sinking, the United States Postal Service is considering cutting thousands of jobs nationwide.  Lavelle Pepper with the post office in Shreveport says they too are feeling the affects of the same disease hitting the country... a struggling economy. "We employ about 685,000 people. If we do layoffs it would include clerks, carriers, mail handlers across all crafts."

Pepper says the postal service is looking to eliminate 40,000 jobs nationwide. There's not an exact number on how many of those could be from the Ark-La-Tex. Pepper says workers who are not part of union with six or less years of service would likely be the first on the chopping block. "We've identified 16 thousand people that are not covered under contract. We'll see what those numbers add up to."

The postal service is also offering early retirement packages to workers over the age of 50 who have more than 20 years on the job. But according to pepper it may not be enough. "The preliminary numbers look like it's not going to be enough and we may have to do something else." But despite what may happen, Pepper says customers will not feel the pain they're going through.  "The general public when it takes place won't se any decrease in service.. They largely won't know about it."

The results are in.....

The Lazarus Project-

An Intresting movie starring Paul Walker as Ben Garvey, a troubled man trying to restart his life after a 3 year prison sentence. He comes home to his wife and 3 year old daughter. His wife is the hot girl form that Coyote Ugly movie. Anyways ... he works at a local brewery and everything is on track for him. One day his lil brother shows up, just released from prison as well, and asks him to join him on a heist. You know... one of those foolproof jobs hollywood likes to dream up. There is only one guard, no safe, yada yada. Ben declines to help seeing his wife is smoking hot or something to that sense.  Ben goes to work the next day and gets hosed due to his job doing a background check.  So.... Ben decides to go with his brother to get the loot or whatever is in the "empty warehouse". You see where this is going right?? Well he goes, things go bad some people get shot by the brother, and the police show up and the only one left alive was Ben. He goes to trial and is sentenced to death by injection. After this is a heartfelt scene where his is being visited by his wife and daughter, where he tells them he is going away for a long time and will not be back... ever. Might bring a tear to your eye. Swiftly put on the gurney and injected with liquid death shortly after. I guess they move quick in texas. The end..... Just kidding. He wakes up at a hospital in Oregon and is giving this whole different life. As he tries to piece together what is happening chaos ensues. I don't want to spoil the ending, but is was interesting and different. Not a bad movie.

Verdict: Rent it

No... I dont work with aliens....

I work with Idiots. I have a good job, so I'm fortunate for that. Now with that being said every morning 6 days a week starting at 5am its the beginning of a bad Saturday Night Live skit. I have a supervisor who talk to herself more than I talk to my wife. I am surrounded by old hens that act like they work for the National Enquirer. My back is Numb to all the stabbing that goes on. All this is held together by the manager who is switched out every few months. This new guy reminds me of Obama. "He is one of us... Just a guy looking out for the rest". Yeah right....I don't buy either, Oh yeah... he wears a mullet! ha ha NEVER TRUST THE MULLET.

Another lazy weekend

Its here, another lazy Saturday. Leaves a falling and I'm a laying. Its getting chilly here 59 degrees. My wife' crying cause I have the windows open. Its not cold yet, but I'm not running outside in my drawers either. I don't know why I shouldn't, I've had my flu shot. I should be indestructible. That's OK... I'll take my chances in my semi warm house. Still no theory's on the Amityville Horror house down the street. Someone suggested that maybe its a police training site, since the police academy is down the street. Beats me.... Tonight's movie "Journey to the center of the Earth". I hope its better than that Indiana Jones movie. I won't hold my breath.

Scary House!

What a scary looking place. Me and my son took a little walk around our area and saw this neat looking old house. We decided toinvestigate! Upon walking in you notice the haunting feel of somewhere that you don't belong. Walking through I saw a bashed in old floor model T.V and a very old piano, and yes it worked, My son was eerily playing it. I told him to get off of it. We proceeded to walk around and I saw a freaking Murder scene as you can see in the pictures above. wow... lots of blood. My son was a good sport though. "Hey dad... Do ya think Freddy Kreguer did this?" I just replied who knows. I snapped some more quick pictures and got the hell out of there. That place gives me the creeps~~
